Inspiring the Future of French Teaching

A day for French Teachers in Secondary and Higher Education

As a charity organisation, our mission is to organise charitable events and outreach programmes that benefit all aspects of our community.
We wish to support French teachers by organising a special conference day at our premises in Cambridge with our partners University of Cambridge-Modern and Medieval Languages, CLE International, ALL, Institut Français de Londres, and Campus France.

Speakers and facilitators

Prof. Stefan Marciniak

Chair of l'Alliance Française Cambridge


Stefan is Professor of Respiratory Science at the University of Cambridge and an Honorary Consultant Respiratory Physician at Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth Hospitals. His laboratory in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research focuses on the role of stress signalling in lung disease. His clinical research focuses on pleural medicine, especially the genetics of pneumothorax. He co-directs the NHS Rare Disease Collaborative Network (RDCN) in Familial Pneumothorax, chairing its bimonthly national MDT.

Bernadette Holmes 

Ambassador at l'Alliance Française Cambridge


Bernadette Holmes is Director of the National Consortium for Languages Education (NCLE). She has made major contributions to languages education in England through her work as a modern languages advocate, teacher, adviser, inspector, teacher trainer, researcher, curriculum and policy developer and author. 

Prof. Martin Crowley 

University of Cambridge


Martin Crowley is Professor of Modern French Thought and Culture and Director of Outreach in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. He also serves as General Editor of the journal, French Studies.

Jane Driver

Principal at North Cambridge Academy

Jane Driver is experienced working with disadvantaged cohorts, and her work was recognised in 2021 with a Gold Pearson National Teaching Award for work with Gypsy-Roma and other hard-to-reach communities. Jane founded the ALL Peterborough MFL and EAL Hub and co-created nationally recognised language projects including the Foreign Languages Spelling Bee, Translation Bee and Primary Bee. She has a passion for educational equity, and a strong belief that languages and internationalism can be a vehicle for social mobility and community cohesion.

Héléna Mercier

Education development strategist at Alliance Française Cambridge


Héléna Mercier has been a teacher of French as a foreign language since 2012 and a teaching advisor at the Alliance Française of Cambridge-Norwich since 2020. After teaching in South Korea, China and Germany, she now works in the United Kingdom, focusing on the development of new course projects, and supervising their design and dynamics. In addition, she manages the training of new teachers at the Alliance Française, in order to support them in their teaching.

Habi O'grady

Head of Faculty at Joyce Frankland Academy

As Faculty Lead of Languages at Joyce Frankland Academy in Saffron Walden, Essex, she leads a strong team of French, German and Spanish language teachers, strong advocates of a pupil-centred classroom. She believes in pupil-led teaching and learning, where students take an active role in their language acquisition.  She works with Pearson Edexcel examination board as a French and Spanish examiner and with the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education where she delivers language teaching workshops to language teacher trainees. Since 2021, she works  with Cambridge Alliance Française as an Education development strategist  for Under-18 pupils. As part of her research, she explored the use of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), a method that aligns with her belief in creating meaningful, real-world contexts for language learning. She also focuses on the importance of target language use in language lessons.

Jeanne Renaudin

CLE International

A FLE teacher for around fifteen years, Jeanne Renaudin is a Professor in the Department of French Philology at the University of Salamanca (Spain), where she coordinates the French as a Foreign Language major at the Faculty of Education, after having taught in several institutions in France, the United States and Brazil. In addition to her duties in higher education, Jeanne Renaudin carries out missions as an associate expert for France Éducation International, a trainer for the International Organisation of La Francophonie and is responsible for the “Youth” section of the magazine Le français dans le monde.
